The Committee for Preparation for Ministry (CPM) works with individuals seeking to be ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament (Teaching Elder) in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and with Commissioned Ruling Elders (CREs) who serve in a limited pastoral role.
Those who feel called to ministry in the PC(USA) should first contact his/her pastor, who then contacts the Session and CPM. If the Session confirms the individual’s sense of call, the CPM will work with the individual and session as the journey continues. Academic and denominational requirements must be completed prior to receiving a “call” (job offer) and ordination. The process usually takes place concurrently with the three-year M.Div. course of study.
A Ruling Elder who wishes to become a “Commissioned Ruling Elder” serving in a limited pastoral role undergo a time of preparation including classwork, field education, and a final examination. CREs may only perform designated ministry functions within a specific setting for a defined term of service. Those interested in pursuing this should first contact his/her pastor. The CPM will work with the individual to chart a course of study in preparation for becoming a CRE.
